Squadded Up tracks your days on the mountain, the trail or the street and lets you see your friends on the map while you do. This page explains what the app collects, why, who else handles it, and how to delete it. Questions go to privacy@squaddedup.com.
The short version
- No ads, no selling your data, and no tracking you across other apps or websites.
- Your location is shared with others only while you are recording, only with the people you chose, and it disappears for them 10 minutes after your last update.
- Health data is used only to import and save your workouts.
- You can delete your account and everything in it from Settings in the app.
What we collect and why
Your account
You sign in with Apple or Google. We receive your user ID from that provider and, if you allow it, your name and email address (with Apple, this can be a private relay address). You choose a username and display name and customise your avatar. We use these to run your account and to let friends find you.
Your activities
When you record an activity we store its sport, time, duration, distance, speed, elevation and GPS route. Activities are kept on your phone and synced to our servers so they survive a new phone and can be shared. Each activity has a visibility you pick: Only you, Friends, Squad or Public. Others see an activity only if that setting allows it.
Your location
The app uses your precise location to record routes, including in the background so a recording keeps going with the screen off. While you are recording, and only if you share it, your current position is sent to our servers so the friends or squad you chose can see you on the map. Others stop seeing your position 10 minutes after your last update. We do not collect your location when you are not recording.
Health data
If you give permission, the app reads workouts from Apple Health or Health Connect so you can import past activities, and writes the activities you record back to them. Health data is never used for advertising or marketing, never sold, and never shared with anyone except as part of an activity you choose to share.
Friends and squads
We store your friend connections, friend requests, invite codes, the squads you belong to and, on the Squad plan, which accounts share your subscription.
Messages
When you chat with a friend or a squad, we store your messages so the people in that conversation can read them, along with when you last read each conversation and whether you muted it. Only the people in a conversation can read it. You can unsend your own messages, and blocking someone hides everything they sent you. If you report a message or a person, we store the report, the reason and the message it is about, and our moderators read it to decide what to do. Messages, map bubbles, squad names and display names pass through a word filter that refuses abusive language.
Purchases
Subscriptions are bought through the App Store or Google Play. They handle payment; we never see your card details. We receive your subscription status (plan, renewal and expiry dates) so the app knows whether Pro is on.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, we store your device's push token so we can tell you about friend requests, squad invites and changes, and new messages. You can turn this off in Settings at any time.
Watch apps
If you use the Apple Watch or Wear OS app, activities and settings sync between your watch and your phone. That data is treated the same as anything recorded on the phone.
Who else handles your data
We use a small number of service providers, only to run the app:
- Supabase: our database, sign-in and server functions. Your account, activities, friends, squads and live position are stored here, in the United States.
- Apple and Google: sign-in, app store purchases, and delivering push notifications (through Expo's push service).
- RevenueCat: keeps track of subscription status across the App Store and Google Play.
- Mapbox: draws the maps. Loading a map sends Mapbox the area being shown and standard technical details such as your IP address.
We do not sell or rent personal data, and we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers. We may disclose information if the law requires it.
Keeping and deleting your data
We keep your data for as long as you have an account. To delete it, open Settings in the app and choose Delete account. This removes your account, profile, activities, friends, squad memberships, messages, live position, invite code and push tokens from our servers. Copies on your own devices and anything you wrote to Apple Health or Health Connect stay there until you remove them. You can also email us to ask for deletion.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR in Europe or the CCPA in California), you may have the right to access, correct, export or delete your personal data, and to object to or restrict how it is used. Most of this you can do in the app; for anything else, email privacy@squaddedup.com and we will respond within 30 days. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit, and our database enforces who can read what: other people can see only what your sharing settings allow. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.
Children
Squadded Up is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you think a child has given us data, email us and we will delete it.
Changes
If we change how we handle your data, we will update this page and the date at the top. For significant changes we will also tell you in the app.
